Texas passes law protecting 18,000 preborn children from abortion pills

Governor Greg Abbott has signed the Woman and Child Protection Act into law, barring the distribution of abortion-inducing drugs in Texas.

The new law targets mail-order trafficking of pills, an estimated 19,000 of which enter Texas each year.

Authored by Rep. Jeff Leach, the law will be enforced through civil lawsuits similar to the 2021 Heartbeat Act, with provisions overriding out-of-state “shield laws.” Pro-life leaders praised the move, calling it a model for national action and urging federal enforcement of the long-standing Comstock Act.

This enforcement comes as Massachusetts has expanded its “shield law,” allowing abortion providers to prescribe and ship abortion drugs into pro-life states.
