Accountability campaign update: Legislators are responding

Since launching its “Hold Them Accountable for Abortion Up to Birth” campaign on August 20, MCFL has seen hundreds of supporters contact their State Representatives and State Senators, asking them to take a position on two important issues: restoring legal protections for viable unborn babies and ensuring state funding for abortion alternatives.

Legislators are responding, and their answers are already revealing important differences in their positions.

As expected, some legislators have expressed support for restoring legal protections for viable unborn babies, while others have reaffirmed their support for abortion access. However, we have also received responses from both sides of the aisle indicating openness to future funding for alternatives that help women continue their pregnancies and raise their children.

These responses matter. Legislators have a responsibility to hear and respond to the concerns of their constituents. That is the purpose of MCFL's statewide legislative accountability project: to document where Massachusetts legislators and candidates stand today so voters and advocates can hold them accountable in the future.

See what legislators are saying

Here are a few excerpts from responses we have received to our two questions.

These are just some of the early responses we have received, and they illustrate why both questions matter. Even among legislators who support abortion access, some have expressed openness to funding alternatives that help women continue their pregnancies and raise their children. These responses may reveal areas of agreement and opportunities for future legislative action.

We are not publishing legislators’ names alongside these initial excerpts. After the October 28 deadline, we will share more information about the responses received and the positions documented through this project.

Phase two: Asking candidates to respond

As planned, the accountability campaign is now expanding beyond current officeholders. MCFL has begun contacting candidates running for the Massachusetts Legislature in the November 3, 2026, election, asking them the same two questions.

We have already requested responses from several candidates. To make participation easier, we are also providing a dedicated form where candidates can submit their answers directly.

Our goal is to give every candidate the opportunity to go on the record, not just those currently serving in the Legislature.

Are you a candidate for the Massachusetts Legislature? Submit your responses to MCFL’s accountability campaign using this form.

The deadline to respond is October 28.

Have your legislators responded?

The campaign depends on continued participation from MCFL supporters. If your State Representative or State Senator has not responded, please follow up. If you have not yet participated, you can contact both legislators today.

1. Send a message asking your legislators to answer both questions.
2. If they respond, forward their reply to [email protected].
3. Share the candidate response form with candidates you know.

Every response helps build a foundation for future legislative action.

Know where they stand. Hold them accountable. Build what comes next.
