Three newborns were safely surrendered through Safe Haven Baby Boxes in Texas during a single week in July, highlighting the importance of this life-saving option for parents in crisis.
One infant was anonymously placed in a Safe Haven Baby Box at The Woodlands Fire Department on July 13, 2026. The locations of the other two surrenders have not yet been publicly disclosed at the request of the agencies involved.
Safe Haven Baby Boxes provide a secure, anonymous way for parents to legally surrender a newborn. When a baby is placed inside a temperature-controlled box, a silent alarm immediately alerts first responders, who retrieve the infant within minutes. Since the nonprofit launched in 2015, more than 440 Baby Boxes have been installed in 23 states, and about 60 babies have been safely surrendered through the program.
In Massachusetts, the Baby Safe Haven Law allows a parent to safely surrender a newborn seven days old or younger at a staffed hospital emergency room, police department, or fire station without fear of prosecution for abandonment. MCFL continues to promote awareness of the law by distributing Safe Haven signs to communities across the Commonwealth, helping ensure that parents in crisis know a safe, legal option is available.
