The Guttmacher Institute reports approximately 1,126,000 abortions were performed by licensed clinicians in the U.S. in 2025, largely unchanged from 2024. The abortion rate was 16.7 per 1,000 women aged 15 to 44.
These totals include abortions performed under the supervision of licensed clinicians via telemedicine in states where abortion is legal, even for patients living in states with total bans.
At the end of 2025, there were 753 brick-and-mortar clinics performing abortions nationwide, with none operating in states enforcing total bans. Online-only clinics performed 24 percent of abortions, up from 20 percent in 2024. Out-of-state travel for abortions declined slightly, with 142,000 patients crossing state lines, representing 13 percent of all abortions.
Abortion Pills accounted for nearly two-thirds of clinician-performed abortions. Most patients were in their 20s, roughly evenly split among races, and 55 percent had previously given birth. Many had incomes below the federal poverty level, and 16 percent identified as non-heterosexual.
The data show ongoing shifts in abortion access, methods, and patient demographics following the 2022 Dobbs decision overturning Roe v. Wade.
