An Ontario, Canada, surrogate is facing a lawsuit after refusing a request to end a pregnancy following a prenatal diagnosis involving the unborn child.
The surrogate said she was asked to undergo an abortion at approximately 22 weeks after medical testing revealed a cleft lip and possible additional concerns. She requested further evaluations and ultimately chose to continue the pregnancy after specialists determined the baby was otherwise healthy and that the condition could be treated after birth.
The surrogate said she was not comfortable ending the life of a child whose diagnosis involved a treatable condition. The baby was later born and received medical care after delivery.
The intended parents, two men, have filed a lawsuit alleging the surrogate violated their agreement and caused emotional distress. The surrogate denies the allegations.
