Study highlights higher risks after abortion pill safeguards were lifted

A new report released by the Ethics and Public Policy Center highlights higher risks to women following the Biden Administration’s removal of the longstanding requirement for in-person medical visits before prescribing the abortion pill mifepristone.

The study, authored by EPPC President Ryan T. Anderson and Director of Data Analysis Jamie Bryan Hall, found that the rate of serious adverse events increased after safeguards were lifted. According to the report, serious adverse events rose from 10.15 percent to 11.50 percent, a statistically significant increase. The analysis also reported an increase in prescriptions associated with ectopic pregnancies, which can pose serious health risks.

The authors argue that removing the in person requirement expanded mail order access and reduced medical oversight, raising concerns about patient safety.
