State Department to flag abortion subsidies in human rights report

The U.S. State Department under President Donald Trump will now consider state-funded abortions and abortion drugs as potential human rights infringements in its annual report.

This marks a shift in the report’s focus, aligning with the administration’s “America First” approach and emphasizing pro-life priorities in U.S. foreign policy.

Senior officials say the new guidelines also cover enforcement of speech rights, DEI policies, and other issues, but abortion has become a central focus. State Department deputy spokesperson Tommy Pigott noted the administration will continue to highlight human rights violations abroad, including actions that fund or promote abortion, framing them as part of its broader defense of life and freedom.
