Spain euthanizes woman despite psychiatric history, raising concerns over mental health protections

On March 26, 2026, 25-year-old Noelia Castillo Ramos was euthanized in Spain after nearly two years of legal efforts by her parents to preserve her life.

Castillo faced lifelong challenges, including multiple sexual assaults and serious mental health struggles, and had previously attempted suicide.

Spanish law permits euthanasia for adults with serious or incurable conditions, but the legal organization representing Castillo’s father (Abogados Cristianos) emphasized that her suffering stemmed from psychiatric illness, not a terminal physical condition. They argue that euthanasia was administered without ensuring full mental health treatment or exploring alternatives to death.

Abogados Cristianos called the case “a failure of the euthanasia law,” highlighting that the procedure effectively facilitated suicide while bypassing proper psychiatric care. Authorities carried out the procedure against the family’s objections, with parents barred from being present.

This case raises serious concerns about the expansion of euthanasia laws and the protection of vulnerable individuals experiencing mental illness, demonstrating the need for safeguards to prioritize treatment and support over ending life.
