Smithsonian criticized for honoring Margaret Sanger, pro-life group demands removal

The Stanton Public Policy Center, a pro-life advocacy group, is calling on the Smithsonian Institution to remove a statue of Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger from its National Portrait Gallery.

The group cites Sanger’s history as an avowed eugenicist and racist, arguing that her legacy is incompatible with the Smithsonian’s mission to present “historically accurate, uplifting, and inclusive portrayals of America’s heritage.”

Stanton Public Policy Center leaders stress that the effort is not about erasing history but ensuring public institutions celebrate figures whose lives reflect the nation’s highest ideals. Previous attempts to remove Sanger’s display date back to 2015, when over 25 members of Congress also called for its removal.
