Senators demand FDA crack down on illegal abortion pill sales

U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA), Chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, joined Senators Steve Daines, James Lankford, Cindy Hyde-Smith, and Lindsey Graham in launching an investigation into abortion drug manufacturers’ compliance with FDA safety requirements. The senators also urged the FDA to crack down on unapproved and misbranded chemical abortion pills sold online.

The investigation focuses on the dangers posed by mifepristone and misoprostol when dispensed without medical oversight. Lawmakers highlighted the risks to women from online sales, including coerced use, serious health complications, and lack of verification that pills are genuine.

“Chemical abortion drug makers profit off killing unborn children while putting mothers’ lives at risk,” said Senator Cassidy. “FDA should act to restore safeguards such as the in-person dispensing requirement.”

Pro-life leaders including Marjorie Dannenfelser of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America and Carol Tobias of National Right to Life applauded the effort, noting that mail-order abortion drugs have increased the number of abortions in the U.S. to over 1.1 million per year, while exposing women to serious harm.

Senators called on the FDA to enforce existing safety requirements, hold manufacturers accountable, and protect women and unborn children from dangerous online distribution networks.
