Senate to investigate dangers of the abortion pill

The U.S. Senate will hold a hearing on the safety of abortion pills, focusing on risks to both unborn children and women.

Led by Sen. Bill Cassidy, the session titled Protecting Women: Exposing the Dangers of Chemical Abortion Drugs will examine evidence that medication abortions have caused severe complications in thousands of women.

Pro-life advocates highlight studies showing high rates of serious injuries, including hemorrhage, infections, and incomplete abortions. The hearing will also review concerns over Biden-era policies allowing abortion pills to be mailed directly to women, bypassing in-person medical oversight, which advocates argue increases risks of coercion and harm.

Sen. Cassidy emphasized that the review aims to prioritize women’s safety while protecting unborn children, calling for reinstatement of safeguards such as in-person exams, mandatory reporting of adverse events, and follow-up care.

“As a doctor and a strong pro-life conservative, I am committed to protecting mothers and the unborn. The medical evidence is clear: chemical abortion drugs not only kill innocent babies, but also put women in serious danger. As Chairman of the HELP Committee, I look forward to discussing how to uphold a culture of life and prioritize women’s safety over political ideology,” Cassidy said.
