A new report from the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee is raising questions about the growing use of online abortion-pill prescriptions and the safeguards in place to protect women.

The committee examined the operations of the three companies approved by the FDA to market mifepristone for abortion and found that manufacturers could not identify meaningful steps they take to ensure online prescribers comply with federal safety requirements. According to the report, Danco Laboratories and GenBioPro have never decertified a single prescriber.

The report also examined the tracking of complications. Before the FDA eliminated mandatory reporting of non-fatal adverse events in 2016, approximately 4,000 such events involving Mifeprex had been reported. During the following decade, Danco reported about 150, even as chemical abortion use increased substantially.

Online prescriptions accounted for an estimated 28% of U.S. abortions in 2025, or approximately 300,000 abortions, according to the report.

National Right to Life says the findings demonstrate the need for greater transparency, complication reporting, and legal protections for women who are harmed by abortion-inducing drugs. The organization is urging states to consider its Abortion Pill Provider Liability and Education Act (APPLE Act).
