A Glasgow sheriff in Scotland, United Kingdom, has dismissed criminal charges against 75-year-old Rose Docherty, a grandmother arrested in connection with actions taken near a hospital designated under the country’s abortion “buffer zone” law.
Docherty had been charged after holding a sign offering to speak with people “only if you want” outside the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow, within a designated buffer zone area. The case was the first prosecution brought under Scotland’s 2024 buffer zone legislation, which applies within the United Kingdom.
Her legal team argued the charges were not sufficiently defined and that there was no evidence of any individual being influenced by her conduct. Legal advocacy group ADF International coordinated her defence.
The ruling concludes proceedings that drew attention to the enforcement of abortion buffer zone laws and their implications for expression in public spaces.
