Reaffirming Life, Liberty, and Human Equality

As the United States marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, this moment offers an opportunity to revisit the nation’s founding principles and their continuing significance in public life.

At the heart of the Declaration is a concise but powerful assertion of human dignity and equality:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

This statement establishes a foundational understanding of rights: they are not granted by government, but recognized as inherent to every human person. The order of these rights is also instructive. The right to life is named first, forming the basis upon which liberty and the pursuit of happiness depend.

From this perspective, equality is not merely a political ideal but a moral principle with practical implications. If all human beings are created equal, then the protection of human life must be consistent and universal, extending to every stage of development.
