Pro-life sentiment shows gradual gains since Dobbs, Gallup poll finds

Analysis by Dr. Michael J. New highlights that a new Gallup poll shows overall stability in public attitudes toward abortion, alongside modest long-term shifts in pro-life sentiment since the Dobbs decision.

The survey of more than 1,000 adults, conducted in May and released June 17, 2026, found that 42% of respondents identify as “pro-life,” a one-point decrease from last year. At the same time, 49% of Americans say abortion should be either “illegal in all circumstances” or “legal in only a few circumstances,” a one-point increase year over year.

Gallup also reports that since May 2022, the share of Americans identifying as “pro-life,” as well as those who say abortion is “morally wrong,” has increased by three percentage points. Support for stricter legal limits on abortion has risen by four points over the same period. Similar patterns have been observed in surveys from Pew, AP-NORC, and PRRI.
