Pro-life Nativity scene highlights lives saved from conception at the Vatican

Costa Rican artist Paula Sáenz Soto has donated a pro-life Nativity scene, Gaudium (“Joy”), to the Vatican, featuring a visibly pregnant Virgin Mary.

The work, on display in the Paul VI Audience Hall since Dec. 15, incorporates 28,000 colorful ribbons representing lives saved through the support of Catholic organizations for mothers in vulnerable situations.

The Vatican highlighted the scene as a reminder of the value of every life from conception, linking the Christmas story with support for women and unborn children. This year’s decorations also include a large fir tree from Italy’s Val d’Ultimo, with smaller trees donated for offices and public spaces throughout Vatican City. Pope Leo XIV thanked the artist and delegations involved, noting the display’s symbolism of life, hope, and light.
