Pope Leo XIV urged Spain’s lawmakers to protect human life “from conception to its natural end” during a historic address to the country’s Congress of Deputies on June 8 in Madrid.
The pope became the first pontiff to speak before the Spanish Parliament, addressing approximately 700 attendees. He warned against subordinating human dignity to shifting political majorities, stating that “every truly just society is built upon the recognition of the inviolable dignity of the human person.” His remarks received a prolonged standing ovation.
Pope Leo said human life must be recognized and safeguarded in all circumstances, and questioned whether a society can be considered just if it excludes “the unborn child, the elderly, the sick, those who suffer in silence, or those who depend entirely on the care of others.”
