During his September visit to France, Pope Leo XIV reaffirmed the Catholic Church’s defense of human life, speaking against abortion and assisted suicide.
While visiting Lourdes, the pope condemned medically assisted death as “false compassion” and emphasized the inherent dignity of every human person, including those experiencing severe illness and suffering.
“It is precisely in the name of this inalienable dignity of the human person that we must reject the temptation to cause death under the guise of false compassion.”
Leo added, “What is legal is not necessarily moral,” drawing applause from the crowd.
The pope also spoke about protecting unborn children during his visit, as France continues to debate end-of-life legislation after enshrining abortion in its Constitution in 2024.
