As Planned Parenthood closes brick-and-mortar clinics nationwide, it is expanding its telehealth “Virtual Health Centers” to provide abortion pills and other services remotely.
Since 2020, Planned Parenthood affiliates have increasingly relied on telehealth, with 133 of their 509 facilities now offering abortion pill access by mail.
This shift is part of a broader restructuring prompted by financial pressures and changing legal landscapes. Many affiliates have closed physical locations while expanding virtual care options, including in states like California, Illinois, Michigan, and Texas.
Experts note that telehealth abortion services reduce costs and create new competitive pressures on traditional clinics. Planned Parenthood’s recent reports show that up to 70 percent of their abortion business is now conducted via pills delivered without in-person visits.
This evolving model raises new challenges for pro-life advocates working to protect unborn children and support women in crisis.
