Pew poll shows Americans support restricting abortion

A new national survey released by the Pew Research Center shows that a substantial share of Americans support restrictions on abortion, reflecting continued public division on the issue.

The poll indicates that only a minority of Americans say abortion should be legal in all cases, while a larger combined share supports making abortion illegal in all or most cases or favors limits. The findings also show that many respondents affirm that human life begins at conception.

Responding to the survey, Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life, said the results demonstrate that Americans remain conflicted about abortion and that support for unrestricted access is limited. She emphasized that public opinion continues to reflect interest in meaningful legal protections for unborn children.

“Abortion advocates want to claim the public supports sweeping abortion access, including dangerous mail-order abortion pills,” Tobias said. “But the reality is that Americans remain cautious and divided, particularly when it comes to expanding chemical abortion.”

The poll underscores ongoing national debate and indicates continued public support for abortion restrictions.
