Oklahoma lawmakers have advanced Senate Bill 1503, which would allow the state health department to award “Choosing Childbirth” grants to out-of-state nonprofits providing pregnancy-related services.
The bill covers services including medical care, mental health and substance use treatment, and housing assistance. It also permits participating organizations to deliver services to Oklahoma residents through telecare.
Supporters, including Rep. Anthony Moore, R-Clinton, said the program would expand resources for pregnant women and improve outcomes for both mothers and babies. “It will save hundreds of babies. I hope it does. I also think it will save hundreds of moms that won't have to have that problem weighing on them the rest of their lives. And I hope it does that too,” said Moore.
Opposition lawmakers raised concerns about whether taxpayer funds should support organizations without medical licensure.
The legislation now moves forward in the Oklahoma House for further consideration.
