In Charlotte, North Carolina, a premature baby named Lyric is defying expectations after being born at just 22 weeks.
Many hospitals refuse to provide care at that stage, and doctors gave her only a 10 percent chance of survival, yet her health is improving daily.
Her parents, Lura Lauer and Ricky Garcia, chose to transfer to a hospital with a stronger neonatal unit after being told their local hospital would not resuscitate babies before 24 weeks. Tragically, Lyric’s twin sister, Cali, lived only two days, but Lyric continues to fight for life.
Weighing barely over one pound at birth, Lyric has overcome brain hemorrhages and other complications. Her doctors now say she is “amazing us every day.” Her mother hopes sharing their story will shine a light on the humanity of babies at 22 weeks and encourage more hospitals to provide lifesaving treatment.
