Nearly half of Americans say abortion is morally wrong, survey shows

A 2025 Pew Research Center survey finds that 47 percent of U.S. adults consider abortion morally wrong, highlighting enduring pro-life sentiment across the country.

By contrast, 63 percent of Americans express no moral objection to patients ending their lives with a doctor’s assistance, reflecting permissiveness of assisted suicide, a practice opposed by the pro-life movement.

Partisan differences are pronounced. Seventy-one percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents say abortion is morally wrong, compared with 24 percent of Democrats. These findings underscore broad support for protecting unborn life even as attitudes toward assisted suicide continue to shift.

The results suggest that the pro-life movement must continue its work with a strong emphasis on protecting the most vulnerable, including the elderly and terminally ill, from the dangers of assisted suicide.
