National Right to Life applauds court ruling upholding defunding of abortion providers

National Right to Life announced Thursday that a federal appellate court has upheld provisions of the “One Big Beautiful Bill” that block Medicaid funding to major abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood.

The ruling lifts a lower court’s injunction that had prevented the measure from going into effect.

“This ruling is a victory for unborn children and for taxpayers,” said Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life. “No organization has a constitutional right to federal funds—especially when those funds enable the taking of innocent human life. With this decision, the courts respect the will of the people, through their elected representatives, that taxpayer dollars should not support an industry built on taking the lives of unborn babies.”

The legislation, signed into law by President Donald J. Trump on July 4, narrowly passed Congress after strong support from pro-life lawmakers. Its defunding provision faced an immediate legal challenge, with a U.S. District Judge issuing a preliminary injunction on constitutional grounds. The appellate court’s decision reverses that block, affirming Congress’s authority to set limits on taxpayer funding.

Tobias praised the court’s action, adding, “Today’s First Circuit ruling reinforces a basic moral boundary: taxpayer dollars should not bankroll abortion (...) We are encouraged that the rule of law has held firm in this matter.”

As the Massachusetts affiliate of National Right to Life, Massachusetts Citizens for Life recognizes the significance of this ruling, particularly in a state where Planned Parenthood remains the largest abortion provider.
