Mother of Noelia Castillo opposes Spain euthanasia law after daughter’s death

The mother of Noelia Castillo, a 25-year-old Spanish woman who received euthanasia, has called for Spain’s assisted suicide law to be repealed, arguing that her daughter did not suffer from a terminal illness.

In a video shared in Spain, Yolanda Ramos said her daughter had mental health conditions, including borderline personality disorder, and questioned the application of the country’s euthanasia law in her case. She also criticized the level of psychiatric treatment and support her daughter received.

Castillo’s euthanasia was approved following medical assessments and legal proceedings, including court challenges initiated by her father seeking to halt the procedure. Spanish courts ultimately upheld her eligibility under the country’s assisted suicide framework, citing medical evaluations that determined she met the legal requirements, including capacity to consent and criteria related to severe suffering.

Ramos has since called for the law to be repealed and said she plans to establish a foundation focused on mental health support. The case has contributed to ongoing public and political debate in Spain over assisted suicide regulations and judicial oversight.
