Massachusetts bishops call Catholics to defend life after new abortion law

The four Catholic bishops of Massachusetts have issued a joint letter responding to the state’s new abortion law and calling Catholics to defend human dignity and the sanctity of life.

Archbishop Richard G. Henning of Boston, Bishop Robert J. McManus of Worcester, Bishop Edgar M. da Cunha of Fall River and Bishop William D. Byrne of Springfield said the law permits abortion throughout pregnancy and allows abortions to be performed in non-hospital settings.

The bishops described the law as a serious threat to unborn children and pregnant women and emphasized the need for practical and emotional support for families facing difficult pregnancies.

The letter calls Catholics to pray, witness, speak up and walk with families, including by contacting elected representatives and supporting efforts to repeal the new law.
