A Texas grand jury has indicted Jon Rueben Demeter after prosecutors alleged he secretly gave abortion drugs to his pregnant girlfriend without her knowledge, resulting in the death of their unborn child.
The charges, filed in Montgomery County, include abortion and injury to a child.
According to court documents, the woman was 14 weeks pregnant when Demeter allegedly gave her a drink containing crushed mifepristone while she was visiting his apartment in February. Investigators said the woman later became seriously ill and delivered her stillborn daughter, identified as Presley Mae, at a hospital hours later.
Prosecutors allege Demeter had previously pressured the woman to obtain an abortion and had arranged for abortion pills to be shipped to him before the incident. Investigators later reportedly discovered evidence of crushed pills and white powder residue during a search of his residence.
Demeter was initially arrested on an aggravated assault charge before a grand jury returned upgraded felony indictments. The charges carry the possibility of lengthy prison sentences if he is convicted.
