Judge rules Maine abortion business can be defunded

A federal judge has ruled that Maine Family Planning, which performed 645 abortions in 2024, can be stripped of $1.9 million in taxpayer funding under the same federal law used to defund Planned Parenthood.

The law targets abortion businesses receiving more than $800,000 from Medicaid, even if they also provide other medical services.

U.S. District Judge Lance Walker denied the group’s request to retain funding, siding with the federal government. Maine Family Planning has not yet indicated whether it will appeal. Advocates note that stopping abortions would allow the clinic to once again qualify for Medicaid support.
