Rep. Ashley Hinson, R-Iowa, has unveiled the Supporting Healthy Pregnancy Act, legislation that would require biological fathers to cover at least 50% of out-of-pocket medical expenses related to pregnancy and delivery, including health insurance premiums.
Abortion costs are excluded, and the mother must request support before the father is legally obligated.
Currently, many single mothers cannot seek child support until after birth, leaving them to shoulder pregnancy costs alone. Hinson, a mother of two, emphasized that the bill is part of a broader effort to expand access to maternal care, support women through pregnancy, and strengthen families nationwide.
