Gender-based abortions increase in UK Indian community, experts warn

A new investigation reveals a record number of baby girls are being aborted by Indian parents in the UK because of a preference for boys.

Between 2021 and 2025, around 118 boys were born for every 100 girls in Indian families, far above the national average of 105 to 100, indicating widespread sex-selective abortion, confirms Right To Life UK.

Experts warn that family and cultural pressures are driving these terminations, particularly for third female children, raising serious concerns about gender discrimination and coercion. The practice is illegal in England and Wales, but calls are growing for stricter enforcement and legislative action to prevent sex-selective abortions.
