Final hours: Massachusetts Senate considers late-term abortion expansion

The Massachusetts Senate is considering a radical late-term abortion bill today, the final day of the formal legislative session, after the House passed the legislation last week.

The bill has advanced through the Senate process and is on the chamber’s “Orders of the Day,” meaning it could receive a vote before the session concludes.

The legislation would remove Massachusetts’ current 24-week limit on abortion and allow abortions later in pregnancy based on a physician’s “professional judgment.” It would eliminate the current requirement that late-term abortions be performed in a hospital setting, allowing elective abortions on healthy babies and healthy mothers at a stage when unborn children can feel pain and may be able to survive outside the womb.

Contact your State Senator today and Senate President Karen E. Spilka and urge them to oppose this bill. If the Senate has already passed the legislation by the time you read this, contact Governor Maura Healey and urge her to veto it.

The Senate’s decision could come during the final hours of the legislative session. Every email and phone call matters as lawmakers consider whether to expand late-term abortion in Massachusetts.
