Families gain legal right to challenge euthanasia approvals in Spain ruling

Spain’s Supreme Court has ruled that close family members may legally challenge approved euthanasia cases, establishing a formal mechanism for judicial review of end-of-life decisions.

The 23–9 decision, issued June 24, 2026, came in connection with the case of 25-year-old Noelia Castillo. The court held that individuals within a patient’s closest family circle may bring an appeal if they demonstrate sufficient emotional proximity and present credible indications that legal safeguards may not have been properly applied. The ruling sets criteria for standing, including the ability to show a meaningful relationship and potential procedural concerns in the approval process.

The decision introduces a new layer of oversight within Spain’s euthanasia framework, allowing family members to seek judicial review when they believe approval standards have not been met.
