European Union-backed organizations have called for the inclusion of assisted suicide and euthanasia-related provisions in negotiations for a proposed United Nations treaty addressing the rights of older persons.
During recent discussions by the UN’s Intergovernmental Working Group on the Human Rights of Older Persons, groups urged the treaty to recognize a “right to die with dignity” alongside protections against age discrimination and neglect.
The debate comes as several countries, including France, Canada, Belgium, Spain, and the Netherlands, continue to face controversy over expanding assisted suicide and euthanasia policies.
Disability advocates and pro-life organizations, have raised concerns about safeguards for elderly people, individuals with disabilities, and others who may be vulnerable to pressure or coercion.
