Dutch teen euthanized raises concerns over assisted death expansion

A reported case in the Netherlands involving the euthanasia of a teenager diagnosed with autism is raising renewed concerns over the expansion of assisted dying for psychiatric conditions.

According to Dutch reporting cited in a National Post article, the teen described life as “joyless,” with ongoing anxiety, sensory sensitivities, and difficulty functioning in daily life. The report states that the youth ultimately requested and received euthanasia under Dutch medical assistance in dying laws.

Dutch euthanasia review data indicate a continued rise in psychiatric-assisted deaths, including among younger adults and minors. Cases involving mental health conditions such as autism, depression, and personality disorders have increased in recent years.
