Court testimony exposes flaws in California’s challenge to APR

Testimony in a California lawsuit challenging Abortion Pill Reversal (APR) has raised questions about the state’s claims that the treatment is unsafe and unproven, according to the Thomas More Society.

During the ongoing People v. Heartbeat International trial in Alameda County Superior Court, attorneys for Heartbeat International challenged testimony from California’s lead expert witness, Dr. Mitchell Creinin, regarding a 2020 study that the state is using to support its case against APR.

The Thomas More Society said cross-examination raised concerns about the study’s design, medical findings, and statements used to argue that APR does not work or poses safety risks. Attorneys also highlighted testimony in which Creinin acknowledged he could not state under oath that APR is ineffective or unsafe.

In Massachusetts, MCFL has worked to defend women’s access to information about Abortion Pill Reversal. In 2025, MCFL leaders testified at the Massachusetts State House against H.4122, legislation that sought to restrict Pregnancy Resource Centers and prohibit APR information.

MCFL President Myrna Maloney Flynn and Chairman Paul DeBeasi, Research Director of APRScience, defended women’s right to receive accurate information and compassionate support. Following advocacy from MCFL and pro-life supporters, H.4122 was sent to a study order, preventing the bill from advancing during the session.
