Costco ends mifepristone sales amid rising pro-life campaigns

Costco Wholesale announced it will discontinue sales of the abortion pill Mifepristone at all more than 500 of its U.S. pharmacy locations, citing low demand.

The company said most patients obtain the drug through their medical providers.

The decision comes amid advocacy campaigns by religious and pro-life groups targeting retailers that dispense Mifepristone.

Other major chains, including CVS and Walgreens, continue to fill prescriptions in states where the drug is legally allowed.

Mifepristone, approved by the FDA in 2000, is used with misoprostol to end pregnancies up to 10 weeks.  According to APRScience, mifepristone works by blocking the hormone progesterone, which is needed to keep a pregnancy going. Abortion Pill Reversal (APR) therapy gives progesterone after mifepristone and has been shown to help about two-thirds of those pregnancies continue.
