More than 50 Republican members of Congress, led by Sen. Mike Lee (Utah) and Rep. Chris Smith (N.J.), are urging the U.S. Department of Justice to complete its investigation into the D.C. Five case involving the deaths of five late-term aborted babies whose remains have been held by the District's medical examiner since 2022.
In a July 20 letter, the lawmakers called for autopsies, preservation of evidence, and a determination of whether the children were victims of an illegal partial-birth abortion or were born alive and died in violation of the Born-Alive Infants Protection Act. They also requested that the children receive a proper and respectful burial once the investigation concludes.
The renewed congressional call for justice comes as Massachusetts state lawmakers are advancing legislation that would expand abortion later in pregnancy by removing the Commonwealth's current 24-week limit.
