The Compassionate Care Coalition announced October 29 at the Massachusetts State House that its statewide referendum campaign to suspend and repeal Massachusetts' late-term abortion law has gathered nearly 100,000 certified signatures, surpassing the 49,716 required to advance the petition. Final certification by the Secretary of the Commonwealth remains pending.
The announcement took place during Massachusetts Citizens for Life’s Truth About Choice memorial exhibition, where the coalition marked a major milestone in its effort to bring Chapter 188 before Massachusetts voters.
With signature collection complete, the next steps include final certification and consideration of the law's suspension. MCFL and its coalition partners will then focus on educating voters about Chapter 188 and its implications ahead of the November 2028 election, when Massachusetts residents are expected to decide the law's fate, subject to completion of the required legal process.
MCFL thanks the hundreds of volunteers, churches, parishes, and community partners who helped collect signatures across the Commonwealth. The Compassionate Care Coalition includes Massachusetts Citizens for Life, Massachusetts Family Action, Massachusetts Family Institute, Democrats for Life of America, and Cape Cod Pro-Life Alliance.
MCFL will publish updates on certification, the referendum process, voter education resources, and opportunities to participate at masscitizensforlife.org/referendum. Learn more about the campaign at Repeal188.com.
