Chile advances historic legislation against surrogacy

Chile, one of South America’s top economies, is taking historic steps to protect women and children. 

The Chamber of Deputies Family Committee has approved in general terms a bill that would outlaw and penalize all forms of surrogacy, citing concerns that the practice undermines the dignity of women and treats pregnancy as a commodity.

The legislation, supported by lawmakers from across the political spectrum, would criminalize surrogacy contracts and related intermediation, with fines and possible prison terms for violations. The bill will now continue through further parliamentary discussion and votes.
