The Catholic bishops of Massachusetts have issued a statement urging the State Senate to reject legislation that would expand access to abortions after 24 weeks of pregnancy.
The statement follows the Massachusetts House of Representatives’ passage of the bill on July 22, with the measure now under consideration in the Senate before the end of the formal legislative session.
They called the proposal a “radical measure” that is “gravely immoral” and urged lawmakers not to advance it.
The statement was signed by Archbishop Richard G. Henning of Boston, Bishop Robert J. McManus of Worcester, Bishop Edgar M. da Cunha of Fall River, and Bishop William D. Byrne of Springfield through the Massachusetts Catholic Conference. The bishops called on Catholics to pray for renewed respect for human life and support women and families affected by abortion as the Senate considers the legislation.
