Canadian patient facing euthanasia receives help from American commentator

American commentator Glenn Beck has pledged to pay for surgery for Jolene Van Alstine, a Canadian woman suffering from a rare parathyroid disease, after she was approved for euthanasia due to a lack of available care in Saskatchewan, Canada.

Van Alstine suffers from normocalcemic primary hyperparathyroidism, causing severe nausea, vomiting, and bone pain, and no surgeons in her province can perform the necessary procedure.

Beck announced on social media that surgeons have contacted him and are ready to help Van Alstine travel to the United States for treatment. He criticized Canada’s healthcare system, calling euthanasia expansions a substitute for proper medical care.

Canada’s “Medical Assistance in Dying” program accounted for more than five percent of all deaths in 2024. Long wait times for medical care and limited access to treatment have led some patients to seek assisted suicide rather than proper medical intervention.
