Canadian doctor investigated after euthanasia process handled outside medical facility

A Canadian doctor has been placed under supervision after medical regulators investigated concerns involving the handling of euthanasia cases outside medical facilities, including both patient evaluations and the administration of assisted dying in non-clinical settings.

College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario found that James MacLean demonstrated poor judgment, inadequate documentation, and conduct that raised concerns about potential coercion of vulnerable patients. Regulators reviewed multiple cases and concluded that some practices exposed patients to risk of harm.

In one case involving 45-year-old Thomas Dillon, officials said the doctor conducted an assisted dying evaluation in a public coffee shop setting. The regulator also found that the process continued outside a medical clinic, including the transport of the patient to a non-clinical facility where euthanasia was carried out.

The College issued a caution and imposed conditions requiring supervision and unannounced inspections, but did not remove the physician from practice. Family members of the deceased criticized the decision, arguing stronger disciplinary action should have been taken.
