A recent Atlantic article reports that Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD), legalized in Canada just 10 years ago, now accounts for 1 in 20 deaths nationwide—surpassing deaths from Alzheimer’s and diabetes combined.
Demand has grown so rapidly that some doctors, including former maternity physician Dr. Stefanie Green, have switched careers to provide euthanasia services.
The expansion of MAiD has raised serious ethical and safety concerns. Reports from Ontario reveal hundreds of regulatory violations, including patients euthanized without proper consent and providers circumventing mandatory waiting periods, yet few cases have been reported to law enforcement. What began as a program for the terminally ill has expanded to include those with chronic conditions, and legislation is now considering extending access to mental illness and minors.
