Canada nears 100,000 assisted suicide deaths

Canada is on track to record its 100,000th death from Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) by early June 2026, just ahead of the 10th anniversary of legalized doctor-assisted suicide.

According to the latest official report from Health Canada, covering the calendar year 2024, a total of 76,475 Canadians had died through MAID as of December 31, 2024. New MAID deaths were occurring at an average of 45 per day, which is why analysts project that the total will reach 100,000 deaths by mid-2026, even without additional growth.

In just a decade, Canada has seen assisted suicide deaths rise far faster than any other country, surpassing the combined total of all other nations with legal euthanasia. In 2024 alone, 16,499 Canadians died through MAID, outpacing countries like the Netherlands, Belgium, and New Zealand despite their longer-standing laws.

The milestone highlights the rapid growth of assisted suicide in Canada, which is expected to expand further in 2027 when MAID access will extend to patients with mental illness.

Massachusetts is not immune to assisted suicide legislation. In November 2025, the Joint Committee on Health Care Financing recommended ‘ought to pass’ for the Doctor-Prescribed Suicide bill and referred it to the Senate Ways and Means Committee. Similar legislation was rejected by voters in 2012. Concerned citizens must stay engaged to protect vulnerable lives. Contact your legislator today to oppose this bill.
