California abortionist faces Louisiana indictment over illegal pill shipment

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill has obtained an indictment against California doctor Rémy Coeytaux for allegedly sending abortion pills to a patient in Louisiana in violation of state law.

Coeytaux has been charged in St. Tammany Parish with criminal abortion by means of abortion-inducing drugs, and Murrill has requested that Governor Jeff Landry approve an extradition warrant to bring him to Louisiana. California authorities are unlikely to cooperate.

Murrill emphasized the seriousness of the case, saying, “This is not healthcare; it’s drug dealing. Individuals who flagrantly and intentionally violate our laws by sending illegal abortion pills into our state place women in danger.” The indictment follows a 2024 arrest warrant after officials learned that a Louisiana woman was coerced into taking abortion pills ordered by an out-of-state doctor.

In 2024, Louisiana classified mifepristone and misoprostol as Schedule IV controlled dangerous substances, making it a criminal offense to handle them without proper clearance, punishable by one to 50 years in prison depending on circumstances. Murrill has previously pursued similar cases, including the indictment of New York doctor Margaret Carpenter last year.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has said he will not cooperate with the extradition, stating that the state will protect doctors providing "reproductive health services" from out-of-state legal actions.
