Blind and diabetic 26-year-old Canadian dies under doctor-prescribed suicide

A Canadian family is grieving after Kiano Vafaeian, 26, underwent physician-assisted suicide on December 30, 2025, despite having no terminal illness.

Blind in one eye and living with type 1 diabetes and mental health challenges, Vafaeian had previously been prevented from accessing euthanasia in 2022 by his mother, Margaret Marsilla, who intervened to save his life.

His mother criticized the MAiD (Medical Assistance in Dying) system, calling her son’s death “disgusting on every level” and pledging to advocate for protections for vulnerable young adults.

Vafaeian’s case highlights concerns about Canada’s expanded MAiD law, which now allows medically assisted death for chronic illness, disability, and soon certain mental health conditions.
