Assisted suicide bill advances in France with support from Macron’s coalition

On Tuesday, May 27, 2025, France’s National Assembly approved a bill that would legalize assisted suicide for adults facing advanced illnesses.

The measure passed with 305 votes in favor, primarily from President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist coalition and the Left Party, while 199 MPs, including most from the right-wing National Rally, voted against it.

The legislation allows patients to request lethal drugs and, if physically unable, to have them administered by a physician.

The bill now moves to the Senate.
