The American College of Pediatricians (ACPeds) is condemning Massachusetts’ new abortion law, saying it removes protections for viable unborn children and creates a contradiction in medical care.
Dr. Richard Sandler, a member of the ACPeds Board of Directors, said the law contains no gestational-age limit after 24 weeks, meaning viable unborn children late in pregnancy may be aborted.
Dr. Robin Pierucci, a member of the ACPeds Pro-Life Council, pointed to the contrast between late-term abortion and neonatal care. Pediatricians and neonatologists routinely care for premature babies born at 24 weeks and even earlier, while Massachusetts law now permits abortion at the same gestational age or later.
“The child’s humanity does not change based on whether he or she is inside or outside the womb,” Pierucci said. “The intentional taking of innocent human life is not health care.”
ACPeds is calling on Healey and the Massachusetts Legislature to restore protections for viable unborn children and is directing the public to its research and position statements on abortion and fetal pain.
