Montgomery Fire/Rescue in Alabama has reported the first use of its Safe Haven Baby Box, installed this past May at Fire Station 10.
In August, a newborn was safely and anonymously surrendered, just three months after the box’s installation.
Officials praised the mother’s courage, noting her decision reflected “love, bravery, and hope.” Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed called the box “a commitment to compassion, dignity, and the safety of our children.”
Alabama law, updated in 2023, now allows parents up to 45 days after birth to surrender infants safely and legally, with baby boxes providing an anonymous option.
