Congratulations to all who packed the Easthampton Council’s public hearing on July 5, 2023, and to those who spoke out against the proposed anti-pregnancy center ordinance! Your presence demonstrated your unequivocal support for women's best interests and made a profound impression.
Although the city council passed Ordinance 6-23, Mayor Nicole LaChapelle of Easthampton vetoed the measure, concerned that the city had exceeded its authority in attempting to regulate an area where state law already applies.
Beginning 10 days after the meeting and ending 30 days after the meeting, the city council can vote to override the mayor’s veto. Overriding the veto requires six of the nine councilors to vote for the override.
We need the help of all Easthampton residents – everyone who attended the meeting and those who could not attend – to urge your city councilors to SUPPORT the mayor's veto. PLEASE call and/or email your city councilor and insist that he or she support the mayor’s veto of this unfair and unnecessary Ordinance 6-23.
The contact information for your city councilor is listed in the directory at this link: https://easthamptonma.gov/Directory.aspx?did=31.
It is no exaggeration to say that the future of pregnancy resource centers in Massachusetts may depend on it!
Thank you, sincerely, for all you do for LIFE.
